Product Description

Described as an ‘exhibition in a box’, this folio on Glenn Murcutt is the most in-depth publication ever on the work of Australia's best-recognised architect. Designed, printed, produced, and hand-finished in Australia it is a timeless study in good design. Inside the linen box, separate volumes break the limitations of size, linearity and singular access that typically define traditional books. There are eight folders and a casebound book. Each folder explores, in-depth, a single building nominated by Murcutt as critical in his development. Each folder holds full-size drawings, separate photographic essays, and drawing-specific texts by architectural critic Kenneth Frampton, who travelled to Australia to study Murcutt’s work first hand. Frampton also wrote the main essay in the book, together with contributions by Australian writers, including literary heavyweight David Malouf, Phil Harris of Troppo Architects, and Liisa Naar who explores–what Murcutt calls ‘his best work’–from the client’s perspective. Distinguished Finnish architect and theorist, Juhani Pallasmaa explains why Murcutt’s unique work can only be the way it is because of the way Murcutt works–alone and by hand, driven by a deep ethical commitment and a clear philosophy on function and detail. Here, good design as a process is explored in great depth.
