Troy Backhouse

Troy Backhouse born in Melbourne, Australia brings together a diverse range of 3d and 2d objects and environments through the combination of a trade, sign writing and a university background, BA Design.
The completion of a sign writing trade in Melbourne, which formed the basis of diverse manufacturing skills, material knowledge and fine artistic skills was a prelude to working on a variety of projects in London, including work for clients such as Harrods, Belgos and The British Museum.

On returning to Australia in 2000 he completed a multi discipline design degree at Monash University where he discovered his passion for furniture. These disciplines have been brought together to create a variety of furniture designs leading to recent international publications. Troy’s designs often become an amalgamation of traditional skills with modern technologies.

I believe design is about the enjoyment of creating objects you believe in. I don’t think there should be imaginative limitations to what you do when you design but that you should conscious about outcomes and impact within the area you design.

'Drop Tail'

with its innovative use of stainless steel materials gives off a beautiful light, diffusing through the mesh skin surrounding its rigid backbone.

Depending on which direction you prefer the light to emit Drop tail can be hung from a hook or placed on a flat surface. Drop Tail is a light form inspired by childhood efforts to catch that elusive drop tail lizard.
