Doris Ko
BDes, BA

Sydney born industrial designer, Doris Ko graduated from the Royal Melbourne institute of Technology as an Industrial designer. Ko has since worked in varied design disciplines including exhibition design in Hong Kong and Sydney and previously in an Australian commercial furniture company.

Further post-graduate studies at University of Technology, Sydney and extensive travels in Europe during 2000, motivated Doris to form ‘wasabiko design’ to pursue a freelance design career focusing on designs and ideals more in line with her philosophies.

Her work is multidisciplinary and includes product, graphics and furniture and interior design. The wide scope and diversity of her work provides much cross-disciplinary influence.

Current projects include the visual identity of a young Sydney fashion designer and the interior of a recording studio.

While much of her work is concerned with technological innovation and production in design, she is still heavily influenced by the somewhat contradictory Japanese philosophy of ‘wabisabi’- an aesthetic that embodies the spirit of the natural environment that is in contrast to the typical modernist ideals and aesthetics.

Her work embodies longevity through simplicity. Contrasting textures, combinations of elements, negative space and varied cultural influences all form a major role of Doris Ko’s design ethos.

Doris is also an accomplished oriental calligrapher.
