24. STUART WILLIAMS

DESIGN LAST LIGHT

24A. Firefly lights

DESIGN INTENT: Designed as a night light, using rechargeable batteries the light has been designed to last 8-10 hours, thus a good light for children. Can be used as a torch, lantern, reading light Or sculptural lighting.

INSPIRED BY: Pods and their organic shape.

MATERIALS: Handblown glass, timber base, earth magnets to hold on glass, rechargeable battery.

24B. Balga Hanging lights 1,2,3

DESIGN INTENT: Balga was intended to be adaptable, allowing different forms to be made from the same light. It needed to be easily produced, flat packable and made from sustainably harvested and Australian grown plantation timber.

INSPIRED BY: The grass tree and the way the needles spiral out from the centre. (local WA indigenous word for a grass tree). I wanted to form a connection between the natural environment and the man made.

MATERIALS: Marine grade Hoop Pine Ply and stainless steel fastenings.

24C. Xanthorrhea

DESIGN INTENT: I wanted to make the Xanthorrhea simple, a light that could be produced by industry, yet each one individual, easy to put together and transportable.

INSPIRED BY: The burnt or dead grass tree and the way the needles twist after being burnt. I wanted to make metal look organic, like wood. Materials: Made from anodized aluminum and stainless steel fastenings.
